What Really Matters When Marketing Online ?
What really matters when marketing online today? It seems like a question that I get more often than any other question about marketing online. I’m not sure if the reason people keep asking me, “What really matters when marketing online,” is so people can avoid doing one thing over the other, but we shall soon see. If you are new to the world of marketing and online adventures, you’ll soon discover that there is a lot that goes into something as simple as choosing a domain name, creating a video, and creating content of any time. What really matters when marketing online changes all the time, but the one thing that remains constant is sticking to something.
When I was a kid I wanted to do everything I could possibly do. I wanted to ride bikes, be a ninja, fly, be an expert hunter, be in the Navy, and the list went on like that for miles at times. The thing I was always told by my mom was, “stick,” just stick to something and when you stick to something you’ll get better at it in time. So, what is it you’d like to stick to? What is it that really seems to excited you when you are getting started marketing online? I’ve had a few friends in the past that believed that ‘video’ marketing was the only thing that mattered. They always told me, “Why spend so much time writing when that doesn’t matter to anyone?” My simple response…”because it matters to me,” and that is the kind of direction you’ll need to get as well.
There are no tricks here online or hidden tools that are not accessible to each and every person coming to the internet today. The good and bad thing about the internet is that what really matters when marketing online is time. Sounds simple enough doesn’t it? Time? I say that because if you have everything you have ever wanted in your life, but for one reason or another you just cold not simply ‘grasp’ it, you’ve got to wonder if it mattered at all. For instance, I tend to be the type of person that loves to write. I’ve been writing since right around 12 years of age and I’ve continued to do that each and every day of my life. It never really mattered much with what I wrote or what it was that I was writing for a long time, but more important to me was the fact that I was. I saw my words being placed in ink, now online, for someone else to share and enjoy with me. So, for me writing was always the clear choice as for things I just really enjoyed doing.
For you, maybe you are the type of person that tends to enjoy being in front of a camera a bit more than others and you find talking more enjoyable. For you, that may be what really matters when marketing online. That’s great if that’s the case. Either way, the thing that always has remained the same since the first .com hit the internet many years ago was content. Without content, we have nothing. We have no website, no video, no email list, and if you are a small business…no clients. Content is the consistent thing that keeps the engines online moving and allows you to grow from here to wherever there is in your life. In fact, I may even take one back step to myself and say it’s really just ‘passion’! Passion for saying something, helping someone, teaching another person, or just sharing great stories with those around you. Marketing online takes a lot of energy before the online marketing starts working ‘for’ you rather than you for it. What is it that you’d like to share?
What really matters when marketing online for you?
What really matters when marketing online for you may be a bit different than what really matters when marketing online for me. The thing is, you may have reasons such as, Market Small Business, Sell My Book, and things of that nature, while I enjoy marketing because I market information and I love sharing information with others. Let’s define what it is you are doing here and where you are wanting to go. If you are a small business things such as citations and a strong domain name with the keyword in the title is going to be VERY important to your marketing efforts online. In fact, those 2 things are going to be about 80% of the efforts you’ll have to put energy into.
The most important thing you are going to have to remember to ‘stick’ to is the thing you find the easiest and most enjoyable to do. If you like creating videos online, make a nice schedule and follow it, make it a game and try to outdo yourself each and every week. This week 4 videos, next week 6 videos, then 8 videos until you realize you are at the pace that works best for you. What this is going to do is allow you to first settle into something you truly enjoy before you move into more technical things that will just make you loose momentum that you really need when you are getting started.
What really matters when marketing online for your clients?
What really matters when marketing online for your clients is quality content. It’s as simple as that. There isn’t some magic Genie that you can create online to draw them in all by yourself, but if your content is valuable they will choose to come back because they’ve found a resource that mattered. Does that make sense? Having an online business is no different than a traditional business in the sense that if clients enjoy your service, they’ll come back. If they find little value in your service and what you do, they will not choose to come back.
You are competing with not hundreds, not thousands, but MILLIONS of people online every day trying to get the #1 spot in their market area. Have a look around online and really take note of the people currently there. What are they doing different than you already are doing? Providing more content? More enjoyable delivery? What are they doing because if they have been there long enough your clients can probably tell you why. People seek quality content no matter how it is being delivered and that’s something to think about every step of the way. What really matters when marketing online to your clients is, again, quality content. Doesn’t matter if it’s via a video or a well written informative piece of content, but the information you provide should allow people to know you care, your educated in your market, and that what you say truly matters.
What really matters when marketing online for the search engines?
What really matters when marketing online for the search engines is left here, at the bottom, because unlike other marketers online, I truly believe it’s the last thing that matters. I say that because without the other few pieces, this bit of the puzzle wont matter at all because people will realize you don’t care and if you don’t care….why should they?
Search engines today look for a few key things that seem to remain in place. Some people will argue this point, which is fine, but from personal experience, being clean matters. Yes, clean, well organized, well put together content either video or print. Just being clean without lots of junk links, banner ads, improperly coded websites, and flash media (FLASH is BAD) because it doesn’t provide much for the search engines to look at. A great resource for this final part of what really matters when marketing online is a site called OnlineMarketingMentors.com because they provide free training and information about just that. Online marketing and all the bits you’ll need to know when it comes to platforms, content, and everything in between.
