The importance of simple things in life seems to be something we’ve tended to forget along the way in our lives. We tend to believe that the most important things that we can enjoy must be things of a greater nature. We tend to forget, to some, the simple things in life, are the things they build their dreams trying to reach.
Have you ever thought about what mattered for you? The things that matter when you believe there is no more reason to appreciate much? Somewhere, along the way, we’ve been told that we were supposed to reach further than our own arms, strive beyond our own desires, and truly…put aside the simple things in life.
If you are anything like me you’ve, at times, found yourself surrounded by everything, yet nothing. You’ve looked at your ‘achieve’ list and realized that along the way, the things you have written, checked off, and then come to desire, were truly not as important as the things you’ve come to miss. For me, I become curious about what happened to the times I’d become eager to put on the worst clothes in my closet to go outside and play in the falling rain for the best time. Where, in our lives, did we begin telling ourselves that we had to have ‘more’ of the things we don’t?
The Simple Things In Life
It’s been something I’ve always appreciated and something I believe I’m finding joy in again all over for the first time. You know, those things that we enjoyed so freely as children, yet seem to miss as adults. The day spent outside with friends playing until the rhythmic sound of waking crickets told us it was time to call it a day. The walks, you know the ones, that had to direction more than the direction of the wind. Those moments…tend to be missed in a lot of our lives these days.
A few days ago I watched a moment in time that tends to get repeated in the story of my mind with more clarity every time it’s played. I watched a young boy walking with his Red Balloon along the beach park. For him, you could see the joy in his eyes as if he was walking for a purpose. He walked with his eyes fixed upon that balloon as if nothing, in that moment, even existed. I couldn’t help but think to myself, “how long has it been since you felt that way?” To hold something close, that was simple, yet held value for reasons only I understood.
As he walked, he stayed focused on the Red Balloon being tossed by the light winds. Relaxed, calm, for a moment he must have forgotten that it was his own hand that held the balloon and it escaped him. Fear, sadness, and shock rushed over him in an instant as his face filled with as much color as his beloved balloon which was, by now, far from his grasp.
To think about the importance of simple things in our life, for a moment, tends to be something we could all do a bit more of. The simple things in life like a warm cup of coffee during a cold morning, a cool wind during a warm day, or a phone call from an old friend. Those things, that for reasons only known to yourself, cause you to smile. How long has it been since you’ve had one of those moments in your life? For me, I believe it’s been a bit too long.
Appreciate Those Simple Things In Life
I’m going to give you a list of ‘musts’ for today because I truly believe that these are the best we truly have. These are the things in our lives that become more important as our time becomes more limited.
- Pause and Talk – How much time have you spent behind a glowing box watching the lives of others in the recent years? Like most of us, probably too much time. Well, today I’d like you to take time out from the crutch of the t.v. and simply enjoy a conversation with someone. It could be with a friend, loved one, stranger, but more importantly, it’ll be a talk ‘of’ life and it’ll be adding to your life.
- Eat Slower – You’ve spent time making the meal you are about to eat or you’ve rushed in through the drive thru and you’ve got a meal before you. This time, don’t think about anything else in your life why you are eating this meal. Think about the meal itself, the taste, texture, and enjoy the moment fully for what it is…providing nutrition to you deserving self.
- Take A Walk – Did you know that simple walking could actually allow you to lower your blood pressure, freshen your mind, and put you into both a creative and relaxed state? Just thinking about that reminds me that as soon as I’m done writing this that it’s time to go walk the shores of the beach here in Hawaii and enjoy my moment as well.
- Play Again – When was the last time you played? I mean really played? Today you deserve a moment of play to get outside and run free, go inside and build a blanket fort, do something that you loved when you were a kid and have long since forgotten. Today, appreciate your joy and allow yourself to feel what that joy inside of you is like all over again.
Thinking about that boy and the joy he had for such a simple thing in life like his little red balloon tends to keep reminding me of my moments here. My moments that I have now, that hold a time limit of expiration unknown to me.
Today, I believe it’s time we all get out and enjoy more of the things we enjoyed when we were young. Today, I want you to remember the importance and appreciate the simple things in life.
